Thomas Hurst graduated from the University of Dubuque in 1986 with a degree in political science. During his college career, Tom played basketball– which is what brought him to UD – and was the team captain for three years. Tom was involved in baseball from 1984 to 1986, and he also played golf. Tom set pitching records with 73 innings pitched and 61 strikeouts, and a record-breaking 156 at bats. During his senior year, the 1986 baseball team established 15 new school records.

After graduation, Tom began his teaching and coaching career at Hempstead High School, Andrew High School, and East Dubuque High School. Throughout his 32-year coaching career, Tom has coached basketball and baseball at the college level. He also coached high school basketball, baseball, football, and golf. Tom and his wife, Judy, have been happily married for 26 years. They have four children: Justin, Lesley, Jandi, and Jerrod, and three grandchildren: Piper, Lincoln, and Iralyn. The family resides in Ninnekah, Oklahoma.
