Jim Kinney won the Iowa Conference Men's Golf Individual Championship as a freshman, becoming the first University of Dubuque golfer to earn the honor. Kinney won the title following a one-hole sudden death playoff. He qualified for the NCAA Division-III tournament in 1977 and 1978.  As a junior he finished in third place at the IIAC Championships and earned Honorable Mention Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) All-American with a 33rd place finish, tops in Iowa. Kinney earned Second Team GCAA All-American as a senior with a 10th place finish. In 1977 he was the top Iowa finisher at the national tournament by placing 33rd. That season he was the number one collegiate golfer in the state of Iowa with an average of 74 strokes per 18 holes. 

In basketball, Kinney earned honorable mention All-Iowa Conference in 1977 for head coach Jon Davison after leading the league in free throw shooting. He currently resides in Lake Ville, Illinois.
