Men’s Golf Captures Great Lakes Intercollegiate Title, Harwick Claims Medalist Honors

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The University of Dubuque men's golf team claimed the Great Lakes Intercollegiate title on Sunday afternoon after an even par round, with sophomore Luke Harwick tying for first (-6), but would earn medalist honors after a birdie on the first playoff hole.

The Spartans won the Great Lakes Intercollegiate after rounds of 278 and 284, shooting a total 562 (-6) for the tournament. After holding a 10-stroke lead through 18 holes on Saturday, Aurora University shot -7 par today and made it close down the stretch, but the Spartans were able to hold on to win by a three-stroke margin.

Luke Harwick earned medalist honors today after rounds of 68 (-3) on each day to finish six strokes under par (-6), tying with an Aurora golfer at the top of the leaderboard. Both golfers went to a playoff, where Harwick was able to birdie the first playoff hole to take medalist honors.

Joining Harwick, Bob Ryan, John Dobbe, and Tyson Malak were all named to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate all-tournament team. After shooting one over par (+1) on Saturday, Ryan went one under par (-1) today to finish even par and in a tie for third place. Dobbe tied for fifth place at one over par (+1), and Malak was two over par (+2), tying for eighth.

Pauly Bloomquist and Joe LaBarbera finished six over par (+6), tying for 21st.

Hear from Dustin Bierman
"Really proud of my guys today. Aurora made a run, and I knew they would. They have a great program and played great, but we finished it off today for a great team win. It was a total team effort, with everyone contributing on both days. Big congrats to Luke Harwick on winning medalist honors in a playoff. Love this group and on to the next tournament."

The Spartans will compete again in two weeks at the Illinois Wesleyan Spring Invite in Bloomington, Illinois, at the Ironwood Golf Course. The tournament will be held from April 3-4.
