Box Score MEQUON, Wis. - On Wednesday afternoon, the University of Dubuque's lacrosse team traveled over to the shores of Lake Michigan for a non-conference matchup against the Falcons of Concordia Wisconsin. The Spartans started off red hot netting 11 goals in the first half en route to their first victory of the season with a final score of 18-9 in favor of the Spartans.
In the first quarter the Spartans raced off to a commanding 6-1 lead with goals coming from six different Spartans.
Kyle Hephner kicked off the scoring for the Spartans within the first two minutes and was then followed by goals from
John Lewis,
Giovanni Silva,
Christian Melton,
Ben Farraday, and
Tyler Johnson.
The Falcons were the first on the scoreboard in the second quarter to cut the Spartan lead to four (6-2). Then the Spartans responded with three goals of their own thanks to a goal from
Aiden Ennett and back-to-back goals from
Jacob Collar assisted by
Tyler Johnson as well as
Sam Todd. With 1:04 left in the half, Johnson scored his second goal of the game and soon after Farraday found the back of the net with two seconds left to give the Spartans an 11-3 lead at the half.
Early in the third quarter the Spartans tacked on two more goals as Ennett and Farraday each netted another goal. The Spartans extended their largest lead of the game to 10 as they led 13-3. Throughout the rest of the quarter, the Spartans did not score another goal as the Falcons managed to outscore the Spartans 3-2. At the end of third, the Spartans led 13-6 over the Falcons.
The Spartans continued their offensive attack with five more goals in the fourth quarter.
Ben Farraday added to his performance with two more goals for a game high five goals on the day.
Nikolas Wortman,
Sam Todd, and
Damon Thompson each scored their first goal of the game within the last four minutes of the game. The Spartans were able to defeat the Falcons 18-9 and capture their first win of the year.
As the Spartans were able to explode offensively, the Spartans had 11 different players score.
Ben Farraday led the Spartans with five goals followed by
Aiden Ennett,
Tyler Johnson, and
Jacob Collar each netting two goals. The Spartans were able to score on 18 of the 43 shots attempted while the Falcons scored 9 times on 38 shots. In goal for the full 60 minutes for the Spartans was
George Smirl who earned his first win of the year. Smirl recorded 17 saves on 26 shots.

The Spartans will have the weekend off before they hit the road once again. On Monday, March 13th the Spartans will travel to Madison, Wis. as they face the Edgewood College Eagles. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
