Men's Lacrosse Lose 10-9 Heartbreaker in Overtime

CHICAGO, Ill. - The University of Dubuque men's lacrosse team lost a road overtime heart breaker on Saturday afternoon in a 10-9 loss to the Illinois Institute of Technology Scarlet Hawks. 

Just like Thursday night against Beloit College, Nate Richardson opened the game on Saturday with an unassisted goal to get the Spartans on the scoreboard first with 12:19 left in the first. The Scarlet Hawks would answer to to tie the game at 1-all before Tyler Johnson score back-to-back unassisted goals to give the Spartans a 3-1 advantage. 

With the Spartans leading 3-2 after 15 minutes, the Spartans scored five goals in the second quarter as Cambell Smith was apart of four of the five goals with four points. Smith had two man-up goals and two assists. Chris Wilson scored his lone goal of the night in the second, while Richardson and Johnson added another goal to their tally to give the Spartans their largest lead of the game and take an 8-4 lead into the half.

The Spartans were outscored 5-1 in the second half and their lone goal came in the third quarter as Richardson scored his third of the night with 10:03 left in the third frame.

The Scarlet Hawks tied the game late in the third quarter, as neither team would find the back of the net in the final 17:05 of the game. In the overtime period, Lake Forest would take control of the opening possession of overtime and would score the game-winning goal 1:58 into overtime for the win.

The Spartans had the shots advantage today with 23 shots on frame, compared to 19 for the Scarlet Hawks. The Spartans were a perfect 22-22 on clears and collected 32 ground balls. Beckett Mull forced four turnovers and Nolan nagy had nine saves in goal.

The Spartans will play the regular season finale on Wednesday, April 22 against the Cornell College Rams at Oyen Field at 7:00 p.m. The Spartans will need to win on Wednesday night to keep their postseason hopes alive.
