CORALVILLE, Iowa - History was made on Friday in collegiate women's wrestling with the inaugural NCAA National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships at Xtream Arena. Senior
Alex Hofrichter and junior
Shea Reisel made history as members of the University of Dubuque women's wrestling team by being the first to compete in the national tournament as a NCAA sponsored sport.
Reisel was the seventh seed in the 117lbs bracket and won her first match of the day by an 8-4 decision to move to the championship side of the bracket. In the quarterfinal round, Reisel would fall to the No. 2 seed 11-1 by technical superiority. On the backside of the bracket, Reisel would fall via technical superiority 12-1 in the second consolation round.
Hofrichter was also the seventh seed in her bracket at 160lbs. She dropped a 5-2 decision in her opening match, but would rebound with a fall in 4:49 over the No. 15 seed. Hofrichter would face a familiar foe in the consolation second round with the No. 8 seed from Simpson College. The pair split their previous two meetings this season, but the Simpson wrestler would win by a 14-6 decision.
Both Reisel and Hofrichter were one match away from earning All-American status. Reisel finished an outstanding career on Friday and helped set the foundation for the Spartans' women's wrestling program and made a huge impact on the mat the last three seasons as a three-time national championships qualifier and an All-American in 2025.
