Box Score 2 DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque softball team will be looking to begin their season in the warmth of Florida when they start their 2022 season in Clermont, Fla. at The Spring Games on Feb. 28, 2022. In 2008, the first year of THE modern Spring Games, forty eight teams were involved from the Division III level. Every year, the games have grown both in popularity and quality. Over time Division 1, 2, NAIA, and Junior Colleges were added to the schedule. In 2020 THE Spring Games had 508 teams slated to come to central Florida and play over 2,500 games at parks in Auburndale, Kissimmee, Leesburg, Madeira Beach, Winter Haven, and Clermont, the birthplace of THE Spring Games!
In 2020, the Spartans finished 8-2 at The Spring Games as their season was abruptly ended on their final day due to the national shutdown with Covid-19 with an overall record of 10-4. In 2021, the Spartans finished with an overall record of 23-19 and 10-14 in the A-R-C.
"It's been two years since we've been able to get down to Florida to play and we are really excited for the opportunity for this team to have the time together to not only see what we are capable of but to get to know one another even better," commented head coach
Jeff Lamb. "We've got a talented group of women that seem hungry to compete and the competition we will get to face will challenge us. We have an amazing group of women that stepped up during difficult times last year and got some opportunities that we didn't expect and I'm thrilled with how deep each positions talent is."
The Spartans will miss the talents of
Morgan Turnmire,
Lexi Schmidt,
Kylee Biedermann, and
Brooke Goodman, but will look to the 11 newcomers who joined the team since 2021. Returning starters looking to provide the leadership include:
Lauren Brown,
Emily Bloomer,
Cayla Cavanagh,
Deanna Origer,
Callie Dutton, and Aly Martinez. Look for the youth of Maddie Belluomini,
Dariann Diorio, and
Katie Schaul to battle for a starting spot when play begins on February 28.
"Excited to get started to see what a lot of these younger and new players can do alongside the returners," added Lamb.
2021 Record: 23-19 overall, 10-14 in A-R-C
