Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WAVERLY, Iowa - The 2021 American Rivers Conference Softball Tournament was a day of upsets in the first round of play. The #1, #2, and #3 seeds all lost their opening game.The University of Dubuque dropped #2 seed Wartburg College Knights in a crushing 15-4 defeat and lost their second match-up to Nebraska Wesleyan University 2-8. The host and #24-ranked Knights would end their tournament run after losing to the Central College Dutch 4-5 in the elimination game.

UD started and ended fast in a big upset of second-seeded Wartburg. Deanna Origer and Kylie Biedermann had massive days for the Spartans (23-17 overall). Origer went 4-for-5 with six RBIs and three runs scored. Origer had the game's only home run and also doubled. Biedermann was 4-for-4 with five RBIs. She had a double among her four hits. Wartburg (26-9 overall) looked like it was back in the game, closing the gap to 6-4 on fourth-inning singles. With two outs and the bases still loaded, winning pitcher Lexi Schmidt got a key strikeout to end the threat. 

In game two, the Spartans were held to two runs off six hits. UD's Morgan Turnmire had the game's only home run, a solo shot in the fourth inning. She was 2-3 at the plate. Nicolette Evans took the loss after allowing just two earned runs. The Spartans are now 23-18.
