WAVERLY, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's cross country season opened today at the John Kurtt Invitational, hosted by Wartburg College.
Anthony Carney Jr. led the way for the Spartans with a top five finish.
Carney Jr. ran a time of 18:41.9 to finish fifth in the men's 6k race today and trailed the leader by 18 seconds. Carney Jr. was the only non-Wartburg runner to finish in the top 20.
Trentyn Gilges crossed the finish line in 19:32.3 to finish 21st.
Jackson Croft (20:14.5),
Jack Mulert (20:15.0), and
Aiden Mohr (20:26.3) rounded out the top five finishers for the Spartans in the season opening cross-country meet.
The Spartans finished third as a team, earning 61 team points.

The Spartans will be back in action on Friday, September 12 when the compete in the Illinois State Redbird Invite from Normal, Illinois. The men's race is set for 5:00 p.m.
