ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The University of Dubuque track & field team competed in the Augustana Midwest Twilight Final Qualifier in preparation for the NCAA Outdoor Championships next week. The Spartans saw four massive improvements to put them in position for an NCAA Championships berth next weekend in Geneva, Ohio.
In the final meet before the NCAA's, the Spartans had a big day in select events as they worked to improve their times and marks to improve their seeding or get into the NCAA field to compete for a national title.
Otis Patterson started the day with a personal best in the 400 meters (46.78) which moved him well into the NCAA Championships in the event with the eighth fastest time in Division III. The time by Patterson also set a new school record. Patterson also ran in the 200 meters and improved his time to 21.10 to be No. 14 in Division III. Teammate
Jaberrius Peake trailed right behind in 21.14 which is also No. 18 in Division III. Both times as of tonight would qualify for the NCAA Championships.
Jaidyn Williams shattered the school record in the men's triple jump with a massive leap of 15.55 meters. This was the first jump over 15 meters for Williams in his career. The jump also broke the Augustana Final Qualifier meet record and is now No. 5 in Division III.
Jaden Gatts was the high jump champion with her best jump of 1.64 meters, while
Braydin Preston was runner-up in the javelin throw (55.93 meters).
Anthony Carney Jr. finished the night for the Spartans with a runner-up finish in the 3000 meter steeplechase in a time of 8:59.13. Carney Jr.'s time is a school record and becomes the first Spartan to run below nine minutes in the event.
