DUBUQUE, Iowa - The No. 1 seed University of Dubuque women's soccer team is set to host No. 2 Loras College Saturday afternoon in the A-R-C Championship match of the women's soccer tournament.
The Spartans are coming off a 4-0 win over No. 5 seed Central College in the A-R-C Semifinals on Wednesday night, opening their postseason in a dominant fashion. The Spartans will now host cross-town rivals, the Loras College Duhawks on Saturday, November 8 at Oyen Field with kickoff scheduled for 1:00 p.m. The last meeting with the Duhawks resulted in a 2-1 road upset win for the Spartans.
About the Spartans
The Spartans improved to 11-1-6 after their semifinal win on Wednesday evening and will now play in their fifth tournament championship game in program history on Saturday, the first since 2014 when the Spartans defeated Central on penalty kicks to claim the tournament title.
All-Conference honors were announced on Friday afternoon with the Spartans receiving the most postseason awards of any conference school. Alyssa Tranchita was named the A-R-C Offensive Player of the Year, Sarah Thompson was named Rookie of the Year and head coach Jason Berna's staff was named A-R-C Coaching Staff of the Year. Six other Spartans earned A-R-C All-Conference honors for their achievements on the field this season.
About the Duhawks
The No. 2 seed Duhawks made it to the A-R-C Tournament Championship after beating No. 3 seed Simpson College, 1-0. Loras scored early in the game and held on for the one goal victory.
What's at Stake
The winner of the A-R-C Championship game between No. 1 University of Dubuque and No. 2 Loras College will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament. The Spartans and Duhawks will battle it out for the tournament title at 1:00 p.m. from Oyen Field.
