DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque celebrates the 39th Annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day on February 8, 2025. This day is dedicated to honor the achievements of female coaches, athletes, and administrators who have raised awareness regarding women in the field of sports. Because of their efforts, girls and women are provided with equitable access and opportunities to participate in sports. Throughout our recent years here at the University of Dubuque, women have played an influential part in administrative settings, coaching roles, and student athletes. We would like to take the time to acknowledge their committed services through sports to help empower women.
The University of Dubuque Athletic department would like to present you with the opportunity to take part in the 39th annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day. It is our hope to get young girls interested in a variety of sports and to be able to give them an opportunity to learn. This clinic will provide the basic fundamental skills for the following sports: basketball, golf, hockey, running sports, soccer, softball, tennis, wrestling, volleyball and more. The UD women's coaching staff, student-athletes and athletics staff will be running the clinic. We hope to see you there.

Communities across the country are hosting events in conjunction with the NGWSD celebration. NGWSD recognizes student-athletes, champion athletes, coaches, administrators and lawmakers committed to providing equitable access to sports for all girls and women. Feb. 5, 2025, is National Girls & Women in Sports Day! The NCAA just recently adopted and approved a recommendation to make women's wrestling an NCAA championship sport. Women's wrestling will become the NCAA's 91st championship and the sixth sport to reach NCAA championship status through the Emerging Sports for Women program.
"We are thrilled to establish women's wrestling as our 91st championship. Adding the championship aligns with the NCAA and Division III's increased focus on investment in women's sports. The NCAA is committed to fostering equity and growth in collegiate athletics, and this decision will launch new opportunities for female student-athletes across our divisions," said Louise McCleary, vice president of Division III. A women's wrestling committee will be established to begin preparing for the first championship, to be held in winter 2026. Fifty-five Division III schools are projected to sponsor women's wrestling during the 2024-25 academic year.
