Box Score 2 DECORAH, Iowa - The University of Dubuque baseball team could only combine for two runs in the first doubleheader against Luther on Friday afternoon, getting swept by scores of 3-1 and 5-1.
Game One
In their conference first road game of the season, the Spartans could not find their bats in game one, coming up with just one hit and four base runners total in the seven inning contest. Patrick Rafferty delivered the lone hit, while Kellen Mitchell and Quincy Bryant would both walk and Bryant would add a hit by pitch.Â
After falling behind 1-0, the Spartans had their first threat in the top of the third. The freshman duo in the 8-9 spots, Patrick Rafferty and Quincy Bryant got the inning started with a single and a walk but were left stranded on second and third. In the top of fourth, the Spartans were not able to take advantage of a two-out Luther error, stranding two more runners again.Â
However, the Spartans were finally able to crack through in the top of the fifth. Bryant would once again reach base and work his way around the bases in small ball fashion. After getting hit by a pitch, he would advance to second on a wild pitch, move up to third on a ground out to the right side and would score on the inning's second wild pitch.
The score would not remain tied for long, as the next half inning Luther would smack a two-out, two-run home run to regain the lead at 3-1. The home run was Jordan Nelson's only real mistake of the day on the mound as he would throw all six innings and give up just three hits.
Game Two
It looked as if the Spartans bad offensive mojo stopped between games, as UD pieced together four first inning hits, plating one run for the early lead. However, the Spartans would strand three in the inning, an unfortunate theme that would continue for the remainder of the game. Luther took advantage of an UD error to begin the second inning and would wind up scoring two runs in the frame to take the 2-1 lead through two.
The Spartans would have their chances to either tie or take the lead, as they had runners on every inning except for the top of the eighth but would strand them all, leading to 13 runners left on base in game two.
UD starting pitcher
Shaun Logan battled for six innings. He would give up 10 hits but cracked down when needed to only surrender three runs to keep UD in the game, while striking out eight Luther batters.
Seven Spartan hitters would record at least one hit, with
Jacob Sonnefeldt leading the way going 3-for-4 with a double, UD's only extra base hit.
Cole DeStefanis would also reach base three times with a hit and two walks and
Jake Cekander,
Kyle Radi and
Hunter Martindale would all rack up two hits in the loss.
Due to the forecasted weather on Saturday, the Spartans and Norse will finish up with series on Sunday with game one beginning at 1 p.m.
