ST. PAUL, MINN. - The University of Dubuque women's volleyball team opened the KTIS Classic with a pair of victories on Friday, defeating California Lutheran University in five sets (25-17, 21-25, 25-27, 25-18, 15-11) before sweeping (RV) University of Northwestern (Minn.) (25-18, 25-23, 25-22). The Spartans improve to 5-2 overall this season.
The Spartans opened the day in a five-set battle against Cal Lutheran. After taking the opening set 25-17, UD dropped the next two before responding with a 25-18 victory in the fourth set to force a deciding fifth set. The Spartans finished the comeback with a 15-11 victory. Delainey Winkel led the offense with 21 kills on a .347 hitting percentage, while Chloe Reiser added 13 kills and 12 digs. Taylor Bechen and Reiser led the Spartans from the service line with five aces each, while Bechen also led the defense with 28 digs. Alexis Kammerer finished with 39 assists and 11 digs.
UD put together an outstanding performance in the evening match against Northwestern (Minn.), completing a sweep with three straight sets. Winkel once again led the offense with 14 kills, while
Megan Cooley finished with eight kills and
Halee Clare added seven. The Spartans recorded 39 kills and eight service aces in the match.
Alexis Kammerer helped lead the offense with 33 assists, while Cooley and Clare each finished with four total blocks.

The Spartans (5-2) will close out the KTIS Classic on Saturday, September 12, against Concordia College (Minn.) at 1:00 p.m. at the Ericksen Center in St. Paul, Minnesota.
