DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's lacrosse team got out to 4-2 lead through the first quarter of today's game against the Lake Forest College Foresters. The Foresters would retake the lead in the second quarter and hold on to a 12-9 win over the Spartans at Oyen Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans got off to a much better start on Saturday then they did in their previous game on Wednesday night.
Cambell Smith scored an unassisted goal 39 seconds into the game to get the Spartans on the board first. The Foresters responded about a minute later to even the game.
The Spartans were able to use man-up opportunities to their advantage, scoring two straight man-up opportunities in the first quarter with Smith's second of the game and
Carter Nelson scoring his lone goal of the game.
Peter Schiess and
Chris Wilson each assisted the goals to put the Spartans up 3-1.
The Foresters would cut the Spartans lead to 3-2, but
Tyler Johnson scored his first goal of the game with 2:18 left in the first to put the Spartans back up by two goals through the opening quarter.
The Foresters scored five straight goals in the second quarter to go up 7-4. With 3:50 left before the half, Johnson netted the Spartans third man-up goal of the game and Johnson's second from a Smith pass to get the Spartans to within 7-5 at the half.
Schiess found
Connor Lindauer early in the second half to get to within 7-6, but the Foresters proceeded to score the final three goals of the third quarter to go up 10-6 with 15 minutes to play.
The Spartans would outscore the Foresters 3-2 in the fourth and gain a goal on the Foresters, but the Foresters would come away with the win.
Schiess led the Spartans with four points after a goal scored and a trio of assists.
Matthew Wright and
Gavin Flattery each had two caused turnovers on the defensive end of the field as Wright picked up four ground balls and Flattery recorded three.
Nolan Nagy played all 60 minutes in goal and collected 19 saves, the second-most in a game this season from Nagy.

The Spartans will be on the road next Wednesday night (April 15) at 7:00 p.m. when they face Beloit College at Strong Stadium in Beloit, Wis.
