Box Score DAVENPORT, Fla. – The University of Dubuque baseball team returned to action on Monday morning in an offensive shootout against Allegheny College. Despite holding an early lead, the Spartans fell 14-13.
The Spartans jumped out to an early lead, plating six in the top of the first thanks to doubles from Zavion Ingram, Logan Cadenhead, and Ryan Turner. Allegheny scored one to close the deficit to five, and both teams scored in the third as the Spartans led 8-2 after three innings. The Gators plated two in the fourth, but Alex Esser drove in a run during the next inning to stretch the lead back to five. The Gators scored eight during the fifth to take a 12-9 lead. Justin Potts drove in two during the sixth and the Spartans tied the game at 12 apiece. Allegheny took the lead again in the seventh and Vic Pico would score on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to one. Brendan McQuillan and Pico would toss shutout innings in the seventh and eighth, but the Spartans' bats went quiet as the Spartans fell 14-13.
Turner collected three hits to lead the Spartans on Monday. Will Sullivan and Esser both collected multiple hits as well. Sullivan scored three times while Turner drove in four runs and Ingram drove in three of his own. Ashr Harris started on the mound for the Spartans and threw 2.2 hitless innings, allowing one earned run while striking out five and walking six. McQuillan and Pico both contributed scoreless innings late in the game, with Pico striking out three of the four he faced.
