Men's Lacrosse Closes Non-Conference Schedule With 12-8 Win Over Carroll

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's lacrosse team won their first game of the season at Oyen Field in the non-conference finale by defeating the Carroll University Pioneers 12-8 on Saturday afternoon.

Five different Spartans got in the scoring column against the Pioneers with Carter Nelson and Peter Schiess each finding the back of the net three times. The trio of Tyler Johnson, Cambell Smith, and Gavin Flattery each had a pair of goals.

The Spartans got out to a 3-0 lead by scoring two unassisted goals from Johnson and Nelson and then Nate Richardson found Schiess for the goal at the 6:20 mark of the first quarter. The Spartans led 4-1 through 15 minutes after Carroll got on the board and Johnson scored his second unassisted goal of the quarter.

Schiess scored his second goal of the afternoon in the opening seconds of the second quarter and then both teams would trade two goals each with the Spartans getting scores from Smith and Nelson to lead by 7-3 at the half.

The Spartans scored their quickest goal of the season off a faceoff to open the third quarter as Schiess scored his third goal just six seconds into the quarter. Flattery scored two goals and Nelson added another two points as the Spartans led 11-5 through three quarters.

In the fourth quarter, Carroll closed the gap a bit, but not enough as the Spartans won their first game of the season at Oyen Field by a four-goal margin.
