After an early 1-0 first quarter deficit, Andrew Beaudoin scored the first goal of the season for the Spartans to tie the game. Cambell Smith gave the Spartans their only lead of the night with 5:53 remaining in the first quarter. The Pirates would tack on two more goals in the opening quarter to lead 3-2.

The Pirates would build their biggest lead of the game in the second quarter, making it four unanswered goals to lead 5-2. Nate Richardson scored the only goal for the Spartans in the second with 4:16 left off an assist from Smith.

The Spartans opened the second half on a scoring frenzy, scoring two goals in 18 seconds to tie the game at 5-all. With the Spartans trailing 10-7 with under eight minutes to go in the game, the Spartans would rally off three straight goals from Nolan Dimitri, Schiess with his third goal, and Johnson added the equalizer with 2:31 left.
