KENOSHA, Wis. - The University of Dubuque men's lacrosse team visited the Carthage College Firebirds for their first road contest of the season. The Spartans and Firebirds were knotted at 4-4 at the half, but a strong 5-2 third quarter by the Firebirds was the difference this afternoon in an 11-8 road loss.
The Spartans got off to a great start today, scoring the first three goals of the game. The first two goals came from
Chris Wilson and then
Cambell Smith scored the first of his three goals off an assist from
Carter Nelson. The Spartans were a man down in the closing minutes of the first quarter, but that did not matter as
Eric Brostek scored the man-down goal to go up 3-0. Carthage quickly answered by scoring two goals in the final 1:31 of the first to cut the deficit to just a goal.
The second quarter scoring started with another Smith goal 2:20 in, this time off the assist from
Peter Schiess to double up their lead at 4-2. Carthage would score twice more in the second, tying the game at 4-all heading into the halftime break.
Carthage scored three times in the first 6:22 of the third to take a 7-4 lead.
Owen Lang added an unassisted goal shortly after to get back to within two goals. Carthage would continue to add to their lead with another two goals in the third, but an
Andrew Beaudoin goal off Schiess' second assist of the game had the Spartans to within 9-6 heading into the final 10 minutes.
Carthage scored their final two goals of the game in the opening three minutes of the fourth quarter to go up 11-6 before
Tyler Johnson added a goal and Smith scored his third goal of the game to get them within 11-8 with 4:44 left. Neither team would score the rest of the way.
Lang won nine face offs and collected eight ground balls from the face off circle.
Nolan Nagy was in goal for all 60 minutes and recorded 20 saves.
The Spartans fall to 0-2 on the season.
