STORM LAKE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque women's soccer team traveled to western Iowa to face the Buena Vista Beavers in their second A-R-C match of the season. The Spartans controlled the game early and never looked back, scoring three times to win 3-0, improving to 6-4-2 overall and 2-0 in the A-R-C.
In the first half, UD outshot the Beavers 8-1, with Kaelyn Nash putting the first attempt on target. Relentless attacking play from the Spartans led to a penalty kick being awarded after Ava Hortillosa drove into the box and was brought down by a Beavers defender. Goalkeeper Samantha Jurgens stepped up for the Spartans and calmly slotted the ball into the right corner to make it 1-0, her first career goal for UD. At halftime, the Spartans maintained a 1-0 lead.
The second period began, and the Spartans picked up where they left off. Hortillosa had the first attempt of the half from the left side of the goal. Nash and Hortillosa each had multiple shots saved before the Spartans broke through again. In the 78th minute, Hortillosa cut inside from the left wing onto her right foot and powered a shot to the far post, past the goalkeeper, to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead. The scoring wasn't over yet; with less than three minutes left, Chloe Westerfeld scored a great header from a well-placed cross off Taryn Richey's corner kick. After a dominant performance, the Spartans left Storm Lake with a 3-0 win, outshooting the Beavers 20-1.
Leading the way for the Spartans were goalscorers Samantha Jurgens, Ava Hortillosa and Chloe Westerfeld. In goal, Jurgens also recorded one save for her fifth shutout of the year. Taryn Richey earned the assist off a great corner kick.
