DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque women's soccer team faced off against the Central College Dutch Tuesday evening. After falling behind in the first half, the Spartans scored three straight goals to even the score, but fell just shy of the comeback, falling 4-3 to the Dutch.
Early in the match, Central scored twice to lead 2-0. UD found opportunities, but were unable to capitalize, falling behind 3-0. Shortly before halftime, Sarah Thompson nearly found the back of the net with a header, but it was saved in the 40th minute. Seconds before the halftime whistle, Amelia Pash also had her shot attempt saved.
Heading into the second half, the Spartans knew they were not defeated yet. Coming out with fury, it was only eight minutes in when Claire Husnick got the ball into the box from a free kick, and Sarah Thompson scored to make it 3-1. The Spartan faithful only had to wait six more minutes for the next goal. Playing the one-two between each other, Brooke Clark passed the ball back into the path of Rylie Mensik, scoring to make it 3-2 from a shot too powerful for the keeper's hands. After a lengthy weather delay, the Spartans picked up right where they left off. In the 71st minute, Olivia Roth scored a great volley to tie the game 3-3. Unfortunately for the Spartans, the Dutch found their fourth goal with under 10 minutes remaining, holding the lead as UD fell 4-3 in a thrilling matchup.
Sarah Thompson, Rylie Mensik and Olivia Roth were the Spartans' three goal scorers for the night. Claire Husnick and Brooke Clark each picked up an assist.
