DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque women's soccer team captured it's first win at Oyen Field this season. In the 2-1 win over St. Scholastica, the Spartans controlled the possession for for the majority of the match.
The first half of the match saw UD dominate control of the ball with eight shots, and the defense kept the Saints from getting a single shot. At 27:45, the Spartans punched a strong look on goal with Amanda Pisciotta striking the ball towards the center of the net, forcing a save. Despite a dominant first half, the Spartans entered halftime klnotted at 0-0.
A halftime speech fired up the Spartans who started the second half with fury. Less than three minutes after kickoff, Virginia Speltz found the back of the net on a bending shot over the goalkeeper into the top right corner of the goal at 47:55; Brooke Clarke got the assist on the score. Against the run of play, the Saints evened the match at 53:21. The Spartans responded by pushing the ball forward and forcing the Saints to make multiple saves on strong shots from Alyssa Tranchita, Riley Trudeau, Kaelyn Nash, and Ava Hortillosa. Samantha Iller also got narrowly close with a shot which had the goalkeeper beat, but dinged off the top crossbar. At 79:43, it was Trudeau who scored the second goal for the Spartans off a corner kick from Kyla Seifert. The Spartans out shot the Saints 28-4 and beat them on corner kicks with a margin of 10-1.
The game's goal scorers were Virginia Speltz and Riley Trudeau, assisted by Brooke Clarke and Kyla Seifert, respectively. Goalkeeper Karrissa Cruz had a relatively quiet game in goal with two saves, playing the full 90 minutes. Alyssa Tranchita led the team with nine shots, Trudeau had five shots, and Speltz had three. There were three Spartans who shot the ball twice: Seifert, Sarah Thompson and Kaelyn Nash. Another five players from UD had one shot: Claire Husnick, Ava Hortillosa, Bree Swenson, Amanda Pisciotta and Samantha Iller.

The Spartans improve to 2-0-2 this season and will hit the road to face Dominican University in River Forest, Illinois. The game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 13, on West Campus Field.
