Men’s Soccer Suffer Loss After Leading in First Half to Cardinals

WINONA, Minn. - The University of Dubuque men's soccer team traveled to Winona, Minn., on Saturday afternoon for a non-conference game. The Spartans scored early and held a 1-0 lead in the opening half before the host Cardinals rallied to score four unanswered. UD added a penalty kick late in the game in a 4-2 final score.

It didn't take long for UD to score a goal when Sam Matthews nestling the ball into the bottom right of the net at 11:10 with the assist from Winston Hedvall. The rest of the half was a close battle between the two teams, with each school earning two corners and getting multiple shots. UD ended the first half with seven shots and a pair of corner kicks. Keeper Nic Hubbard ended the half with a save after the Cardinals ended with 11 shots.

The second half started as a stalemate with both teams getting good looks on mark when the Cardinals scored at 56:26 to tie the contest. The Spartans answered quickly with Elliott Solberg getting a shot on goal which was saved. Matthew Bernik added a shot saved in the 66th minute, hitting one towards the bottom left corner of the goal. At 71:25, the Cardinals took the lead 2-1 and held on for the win. UD kept the Cardinal's keeper busy after 18 shots and placed eight on goal.

Sam Matthews led the team with six shots and a goal. Matthew Bernik and Albin Lauridsen each had three shots, with Lauridsen scoring a goal. Six different Spartans had a shot on the day: Jose Serra, Winston Hedvall, Brady Wagner, Mario Meier, Brock Richardson and Elliott Solberg. Hedvall got the assist early in the game. Goalkeeper Nic Hubbard played all 90 minutes in goal and compiled two saves in the loss.

The Spartans will return home on Friday, September 12, to face Bethany Lutheran College. Kickoff is slated for 3:00 p.m. on Oyen Field.
