Men's Soccer Shows Offensive Strength in 3-3 Home Draw

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's soccer team played on its home field Friday afternoon against Bethany Lutheran College. The Spartans got their second draw of the season in a 3-3 high-intensity match.

The start of the game was strong for the Spartans as they put back-to-back shots at the Vikings' goalkeeper in the 10th minute. From a free kick, it was Jose Serra who got to the ball and put a shot on target, which forced the save, bouncing to Sam Matthews, who forced the Vikings into another save. At 18:47, UD made two substitutions, and Ebbot Bekkebraaten entered the game. Ebbot made an instant impact with a corner kick at 20:50, which swung into the box and past the goalkeeper to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. It was all UD for the next 10 minutes, where Eddie Papis found himself through on goal and scored from a great through ball played in by Winston Hedvall to make it 2-0. Before the halftime whistle, the Vikings pulled one back to make it 2-1 at the break.

The second half started with both teams battling it out in a physical matchup before the Vikings equalized at 67:01 to make the score 2-2. The Spartans didn't hesitate as they quickly worked the ball into the final third, and at 68:35, Luka Tomic crossed in a perfect ball to the foot of Winston Hedvall to make the score 3-2. Bethany Lutheran evened the score at 3-3 with a goal at 79:50. It was a battle the rest of the game as both teams had decent chances. Hedvall nearly found a second goal, forcing the keeper to run out and make the save only a minute after the equalizer. At full-time, the game ended without a winner as the Spartans got their second draw of the season.

Winston Hedvall led the Spartans with four shots, a goal, and an assist. Goalkeeper Riley Johnson made five saves on the day. Two other Spartans scored, Ebbot Bekkebraaten and Eddie Papis, with Luka Tomic getting an assist on Hedvall's goal.
