Serra Scores Early Goal, Men's Soccer Falls to Wheaton

WHEATON, Ill. - The University of Dubuque men's soccer team got off to a quick start in the first half of the game against Wheaton College. At the full-time whistle, the Spartans fell 2-1 in a close game on the road.

It took only 10 minutes for UD to find the back of the net after a shot by Mario Meier was saved and fell to Jose Serra, who punched it in the goal to give the Spartans the lead. Following the goal, the Thunder nearly evened the score at the end of the first half with a shot that was saved by Riley Johnson. Going into the break, the Spartans maintained a 1-0 lead.

To start the second half, the Thunder scored two quick goals at the 54:17 and 59:34 marks to make it 2-1 in favor of the Thunder. Sam Matthews found a good look with a shot at 66:24, which forced a save from the goalkeeper. It was a physical contest in the last 20 minutes of the game as the Spartans fell 2-1 to the Thunder.

Jose Serra led UD on the night with three shots and a goal. Sam Matthews and Brady Wagner each had two shots on the night, while Mario Meier and Draek Littler each had one shot. Riley Johnson made three saves in 90 minutes in goal.
