DUBUQUE, Iowa – How sweep it is! The University of Dubuque women's volleyball team defeated the Coe College Kohawks on Wednesday evening in both teams' A-R-C opener by a score of 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-19). The Spartans welcomed back former head coach April Elsbernd, who is in her first season guiding Coe College as head coach. The Kohawks, picked to finish first in the coaches preseason poll, tumbled to the top-ranked Spartans in straight sets.
The match started with all the flair and fire of a match between the conference's top teams, with teams trading short runs to start the contest. With the first set tied at 10, the Spartans took the next four points, with the run capped by two aces from
Delainey Winkel. The Kohawks were never able to catch up as the Spartans took the first set 25-17. The Kohawks responded with a seven-point run after the Spartans took the first point of the set to take a 7-1 lead. The Kohawks held a lead at 12-4 before the Spartans stormed back by claiming ten of the next eleven points to take a 14-13 lead. After a four-point run by the Kohawks and a five-point run by the Spartans, both teams traded points before the Spartans took the final four points of the set to secure a 25-22 victory in the set. The Kohawks had no answers for a dominant Spartans offense early in the third set as they jumped out to a 11-1 lead. The Kohawks attempted to claw back several times but never cut the deficit to less than four, as the Spartans cruised to a 25-19 victory and a 3-0 sweep.
Ashley Glennon led the powerful Spartans offense as she finished with 10 kills and a .500 hitting percentage along with a solo block and block assist on defense. Winkel finished with eight kills and two service aces.
Megan Cooley also bullied the Kohawks at the net, finishing with seven kills, two solo blocks, and two block assists.
Taylor Bechen led the Spartans with 17 digs on the night. Glennon and Winkel solidified the Spartans back-court with 13 and 11 digs each.
Caitlin Jensen added a solo block and two block assists in what amounted to be a fruitless night at the net for Kohawk hitters.
Alexis Kammerer and
Ashlyn McGinnis once again led the Spartans in assists, finishing with 19 and 15 assists, respectively.
