Tranchita's Late Penalty Kick Sends Women's Soccer to a Draw With Carroll

WAUKESHA, Wis. - The University of Dubuque women's soccer team traveled to Carroll University (WI) for their 2025 road opener on Tuesday night, ending in a 1-1 draw after a late penalty kick gave the Spartans their lone goal of the night.

For a full 90 minutes tonight, the Spartans dominated the offensive attack as the Spartans ended the game with 20 total shots, including nine shots on goal. Carroll's only shots on offense came in the first half, finding the back of the net on one of their only two shots of the game in the 41st minute right before the half.

The Spartans in the second half forced 11 shots offensively, but were unable to tie the game. In the 84th minute, Virginia Speltz would get fouled in the penalty box as she was trying to get a look to score, setting up a potential game-tying penalty kick shot. The Spartans chose senior midfielder Alyssa Tranchita to take the penalty shot. Tranchita already had seven of the Spartans' nine shots on goal attempts leading up the penalty shot. Tranchita would connect in the upper left side of the goal off the goalkeepers fingertips to tie the game at 1-all.

The Spartans dominated the corner kick opportunities, adding 14 corners in the draw. Karissa Cruz had a quite night in goal, recording one save in 90 minutes.

The Spartans are now 0-0-2 on the season.
