CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Dubuque women's golf team shot an opening round of 304 at the Coe College Kohawks Classic on Saturday and are in second place of the 10 team tournament. Gracie Russell led the Spartans with a two over par 74 and is in 4th place overall.

Leah Balsbaugh collected two birdies and finished with a 76 (tied for 6th place overall) as well as teammate Payton Morton who shot a 76 after paring the front nine holes. Drew Hoffer sits in 12th place after a score of 78.Olivia Hines finished with a 84 and is 37th place. UD also had four individuals competing and are led by Kaycee Newman and Megan Stephan who both fired off rounds of 78 for 12th overall. Jenna Albanese had a score of 81 (24th overall) and Elizabeth Tucker 85 (41st place).

"We did a good job of staying patient today and not getting ahead of ourselves, added head coach Dustin Bierman. "We did a great job on the greens and we really limited the big numbers. It's a good start with a team score of 304, but doesn't mean much if you can't go do it again tomorrow. Really proud of how our freshmen who played today for their first collegiate round - Gracie with a 74 and Jenna 81. Should be a fun day tomorrow."

The classic will finish up on Sunday, August 31 with a shotgun start beginning at 8:50 a.m.
