DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's soccer team took to their home field for the first time this season against the Grinnell College Pioneers. At the full-time whistle, the Spartans walked away with a 1-1 draw after tying the game in the second half.
The game got off to a quick start with both teams battling it out on the field before the Pioneers managed to score in the fourth minute on the first shot of the game, making it 1-0 in favor of the Pioneers. After the goal, the Spartans got some good looks, with the best chance of the first half falling to
Gavin Ehlers, who got a good shot into the top corner, but had it saved by the Pioneers goalkeeper. Before halftime, the Spartans had multiple dangerous moments in the box from long throws and a corner kick.
The Spartans came out of the half with two quality looks from
Mario Meier, including squeezing one shot into the bottom right corner of the net, but the Pioneers made the save with his fingertips to prevent the tying goal. The threats into the box continued in the second half with the big moment coming in the 70th minute off a corner kick.
Albin Lauridsen took the corner kick into the box where it found the head of
Jose Serra, who guided the ball into the net to square the score at 1-1.
Following the Spartans' goal, they looked dangerous and fought hard to find the second goal with multiple near misses on long throws and corner kicks. The Pioneers picked up pace late, but the Spartans' defense held strong, squandering multiple chances that Grinnell had to take the lead.

The Spartans will be back on the road next week as they travel to Elmhurst University in Elmhurst, Illinois, on Wednesday, September 3. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Langhorst Field.
