LISLE, Ill. - The inaugural Julien-Hatch rivalry game took place Wednesday night on the campus of Benedictine University where the Spartans would tie the game late in regulation and ultimately score the game-winner in the second overtime. The Spartans are now winners of three straight and open up NACC play at 3-0.
After being named NACC Offensive Athlete of the Week, senior attackerÂ
Sam Todd continued his dominance tonight scoring the Spartans first five goals of the game. Todd would end up with six total points for the game.
Peter Schiess would score his lone goal in the second quarter to give the Spartans a 6-4 lead at the half. Schiess ended the game with three points.Â
Andrew Beaudoin scored the first goal of the third quarter to give the Spartans a three goal lead, but Benedictine scored the next five goals to go up 9-7 with 9:15 left to play in the game. In the final four minutes, first-year midfielder
Cambell Smith would come up clutch, cutting the deficit to one with 3:36 left. With the Spartans on their last breath Smith was able to send the all or nothing shot at the goal and zipping it right by the Benedictine goal keeper with seven seconds left to send the game to overtime.Â
After a total of only three shots (none on goal) combined in the first overtime between the two teams, Benedictine got one chance in the second overtime to score and end the game, while the Spartans had three chances and none a single one of them was bigger than the third shot coming from Beaudoin to win the game with 49 seconds left in the second extra period.
The Spartans are now back to .500 at 4-4 overall and ride a three game winning streak in NACC play within the last five days.Â
