Spartans Battle to Tie Against Lawrence University in Hockey Fights Cancer Game

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque women's hockey team showcased a dominant defensive effort in Saturday's match-up against Lawrence University, battling through regulation and overtime to a 0-0 tie in conference play. The Vikings ultimately edged out the Spartans in a shootout, winning 1-0.

Friday, February 7th, was the UDHockey Fights Cancer game vs. Lawrence University. Many attending the game wore purple to honor and remember everyone who has been affected by this horrible disease. Proceeds will benefit UD assistant baseball coach Andrew Redman and his family, whose son Everett, was diagnosed with a baseball size tumor on June 28, 2023 and underwent surgery on July 5, 2023 where they removed about 30% of the tumor. He is being treated at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital in Iowa City. The Spartans came out strong in the opening period, firing 14 shots on goal while holding Lawrence to just three. The defensive intensity remained high in the second, with both teams adding 10 shots on goal but unable to break through.

Dubuque's penalty kill unit delivered a crucial performance in the third period, shutting down a 3-on-5 disadvantage to keep the game scoreless. The Spartans continued to pressure offensively with another 14 shots on goal but couldn't find the back of the net.

After a scoreless overtime, the game remained a 0-0 tie for conference standings. A best-of-three shootout followed, where Lawrence netted the lone goal to claim the shootout win.

The Spartans finished with 33 shots on goal, with Lauren Jeffery and Evie Daly leading the offensive attack with 5 shots each. Zoe Cupples was dominant in the faceoff circle, winning 13.

Goaltender Savannah Wuitschick was stellar between the pipes, recording 28 saves to earn the shutout in regulation and overtime.

The Spartans will face the Vikings again Saturday, February 8, at 2:00 p.m. at ImOn Arena.
