The Sabres scored the first basket of the second half to pull within two to cap off their 13-0 run, but the Spartans responded immediately with a 10-0 run to go back up 48-36. The Spartans grabbed their largest lead of the game (68-50) in the first few minutes of the fourth quarter, but the Sabres did not go away quietly with one last run late in the game to got them to within 72-67 with 23 seconds left. The Spartans were able to seal the deal with a few late free throws and key stops on defense to open the season with a win.
