Women's Basketball Edges Lakeland in Overtime Thriller

PLYMOUTH, Wis. - The University of Dubuque women's basketball team won a thrilling 77-75 overtime game on the road at Lakeland University Wednesday night behind a career-high performance from Taylor Martin with 19 points.

The Spartans trailed early in the first quarter 8-1, but the Spartans hit three of their six three-pointers in the opening quarter to tie the game at 12-all. The Spartans trailed again by four points with 47 seconds left in the first quarter after a Muskies 4-0 run. The Spartans would answer with their own 4-0 run to close out the quarter pulled even with the Muskies.

The opening three minutes of the second quarter belonged to the Muskies, scoring the first six points of the quarter to increase their lead back to 22-16. The Spartans kept answering the Muskies' run, this time with a 10-1 run to give the Spartans their first lead of the night 26-23 after Felicity Figlinski knocked down a big three-pointer. Figlinski's three-pointer with 4:30 left before half would be the Spartans final field goal as the Muskies led 34-29 at the half.

The Spartans trailed by as many as nine on two separate occasions in the third quarter, but the final two minutes of the quarter were a critical moment in the game as the Spartans went on a 6-2 run to trim the Muskies lead to 54-51 entering the final quarter.

The Spartans held the Muskies without a field goal in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter and were able to regain the lead 55-54 with 7:30 left. The Muskies regained the lead on the following possession and help the lead until the closing seconds of regulation. The Spartans fouled the Muskies with 19 seconds left in the game and would split a crucial set of free throws to put them up 69-66.

After a timeout, the Spartans got a good look to tie the game, but a big offensive rebound by Figlinski led to a Lilly Craig three-pointer from the corner tied the game up. The Muskies got one last chance for the win, but the shot would fall off target to send the game to overtime.

In the overtime period, the Spartans got down by four halfway through overtime, but would respond with the next eight points, six of them from Simonetti to take a 77-73 lead with 19 seconds left. The Muskies would score once more, but the two possession lead for the Spartans gave them their second consecutive win to open the season.

Four Spartans finished in double figures, led by Taylor Martin with a career-high 19 points. Martin also went 8-11 from the free throw line. Simonetti recorded her second career double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Lilly Craig and Ella Gabbert finished with 13 and 11 points respectively. Craig was one rebound shy of a double-double with nine boards.

The Spartans move to 2-0 overall on the young season.
