FOND DU LAC, Wis. - The University of Dubuque women's hockey team played Marian University on the road Friday night. The Spartans struck twice in the match, but were unable to overcome the Sabres, falling 4-2.
The first period saw Marian score early to take a 1-0 lead. The Spartans nearly struck right back at the Sabres with three shots saved within two minutes of the goal. The shots were taken by Madilynn Schiile, Ashleigh Eldridge and Alexandria Simmons. At the end of the period, Marian struck late to take a 2-0 lead.
Motivated to get back in the game, UD stormed into the second period and put up a fight. With less than two minutes played, Natalie Post won the puck in the Spartans' attacking half before picking out Madilynn Schiile in a perfect position right in front of the goal. The puck was struck with too much force for the goalkeeper and Schiile brought the score to within one. The score at the end of the second period was 2-1.
The third period began the same as the other two, with an early score, this one by the Sabres, making it 3-1. Determined to stay in the match, the Spartans capitalized on a power play by passing the puck effectively. At 5:13 in the third period, Dani Denhof picked out Malia Tetreault close to the goal, who had her shot saved before it rebounded out to Madilynn Schiile, who slammed the puck past the goalie for her second of the night.After a tough battle, UD fell 4-2 at the end of the third period.
The Spartans were led by Madilynn Schiile, who scored a twice and had three shots. Malia Tetreault accounted for an assist and three shots. Natalie Post won eight faceoffs and picked up an assist. Dani Denhof had an assist and won all three of her faceoffs for the night.
