WAVERLY, Iowa - The University of Dubuque Men's Soccer team traveled to Waverly on Wednesday night to face the Wartburg College Knights. Keeping the game close in the first half, the Spartans fought the whole game, but ended with a 5-2 loss.
In the first half, UD fell behind 2-0 with goals scored by Wartburg at 4:29 and 26:49. Nic Hubbard made a huge stop at 21:33 when the Knights were awarded a penalty kick; Hubbard dived to the right of his goal where he made a great save to keep the Knights from scoring. Before the end of the half, the Spartans brought the score back within one goal on a fast break. On the break, Mario Meier sent a through ball down the middle to Eddie Papis, where Papis snuck the ball passed the Knights' goalkeeper to make the score 2-1.
Despite a strong effort in the second half, the Spartans fell behind 5-1 to Wartburg. Although UD never gave up the fight, as they pulled a goal back at 86:48. The goal came from Eddie Papis putting a long ball into the box, which found the foot of Winston Hedvall, who struck it into the back of the net. At the full-time whistle, the Spartans came up short to Wartburg on the road, 5-2.
Eddie Papis led the Spartans on the night with a goal and an assist. Winston Hedvall found his third goal of the season, and Mario Meier got his second assist of the year. Nic Hubbard in goal had eight saves, multiple of which were diving stops.

The Spartans will return home to face Nebraska Wesleyan University on Saturday, October 11. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Oyen Field.Â
