Women's Soccer Upset Unbeaten #15 Duhawks 2-1

First win over the Duhawks for the Spartans since 2014

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque women's soccer team pulled off what no other conference school has been able to do since 2020 and that was defeat the Loras College Duhawks in conference play. The Spartans offense produced two goals that would prevail them over the No. 15 Duhawks on Wednesday night at the Rock Bowl.

The Duhawks this season had only given up one goal to it's opponents and the Spartans got on the board fast tonight as Bree Swenson scored her first career goal in the eighth minute off a Virginia Speltz assist to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. The Spartans would retain the one goal lead at the half.

After a foul by the Spartans just outside of the box, the Duhawks would score the equalizer in the 51st minute to bring the score to 1-all. The 1-1 deadlock would not last long as a Claire Husnick's corner kick opportunity led to Riley Trudeau relaying the ball off her head, past the Duhawks' keeper to give the Spartans the lead right back only 1:35 after the Duhawks had previously tied the game.

The Spartans threatened one more time with under 10 minutes to go in an effort to put the game away, but the Spartans' goal would be rescinded after an offsides call. With under two minutes remaining, the Duhawks got one final opportunity on a play that was very similar to their first goal of the game. This time, however, Samantha Jurgens would get her fingertips on the ball that then proceeded to ricochet off the cross bar. That crucial save by Jurgens saved the game from resulting in a draw. Jurgens finished the game with five saves and played an outstanding game in goal for the Spartans.

With the upset win, the Spartans defeated the Duhawks for the first time since 2014 (11 years), and were able to snap the Duhawks' 48 game regular season and conference tournament streak that has been in tact since the 2020 season.

The Spartans are now 8-1-6 overall and 5-0-1 in conference play. With two conference games remaining in the regular season the Spartans now control their own destiny towards an A-R-C regular season championship and the No. 1 seed in the A-R-C Tournament.
