DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque women's soccer team dominated the Augustana Vikings on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans piled on the goals, winning the match 5-1 behind a spectacular offensive display.
In the first half, UD got off to a quick start, scoring only four minutes into the game when Virginia Speltz slipped in behind the Vikings' defense, slotting the ball into the bottom corner of the goal from a great ball played in by Brooke Clark. At the nine-minute mark, the Spartans lined up for a corner kick. Claire Husnick took the shot directly from the corner and scored a world-class goal, bending the ball into the top corner of the net. Alyssa Tranchita scored in the 32nd minute on a ball played in by Amanda Pisciotta, dribbling through the box and hitting the ball left-footed into the top left of the goal. Before the break, Augustana pulled one goal back to make it 3-1. The Spartans out shot the Vikings 18-2 in the first half.
The second half was all Spartans as UD scored their fourth and fifth goals. Alyssa Tranchita got on the scoresheet a second time, with Brooke Clark registering her second assist of the day. Then Tranchita played the ball into Virginia Speltz at 69:48, where Speltz danced around the goalkeeper and nestled the ball into the net. At the full-time whistle, the Spartans cruised to a 5-1 win over the Vikings. UD out shot Augustana 33-4 on the day, with the defense playing solid the entire match.
Alyssa Tranchita led the Spartans with two goals and an assist, followed by Virginia Speltz with two goals and Brooke Clark with two assists. Claire Husnick scored once, and Amanda Pisciotta earned an assist.
The Spartans improve to 7-1-6 overall this season.
