Football Downed by #8 Knights in Road Loss, Spartans Defense Block Two Field Goals

WAVERLY, Iowa - The University of Dubuque football team faced #8 Wartburg College Knights on their Hall of Fame/Homecoming game in front of a capacity crowd on Saturday. The Spartans dug themselves a big hole to start the game when the hosts Knights scored at 10:06 on a seven yard run. Less than a minute later, UD punted and the Knights defense blocked the kick and returned it 19 yards to extend the lead 14-0. At 4:45 of the first quarter, Wartburg extended the lead to 21-0 on a one play 64 yard touchdown pass. UD would fall to the top-ranked Knights 33-7.

The Spartans lone score was a 24 yard touchdown catch by Kali Freeman from Joey Rhomberg ay 12:51 of the second quarter to slice the lead 7-28. Freeman led the Spartans with six catches for 115 yards with his longest being 30 yards. Kaedon Phillips caught eight passes for 60 yards. Joey Rhomberg completed 29-45 pass attempts for 279 yards, he led the rushing with 14 carries for 36 yards.

Alex Rashid led the defense with eight solo and one assisted tackle and teammate Jacob Garlick ended with seven tackles which included 1.5 sacks for losses of eighty yards. Ben Egan picked off a Knight's pass and returned it 34 yards in their loss. UD blocked a pair of field goals, Chris Hicks-Davenport and Joziah Perez both earned a block on Saturday. Rhomberg punted once for 28 yards and Brady Buchmann had one punt for 35 yards

Next week, UD will return to Chalmers Field when they host the Buena Vista University Beavers on Oct. 18 at 1:00 p.m..
