Football Returns Home for 47-20 Victory Over the Beavers

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque fell behind by a touchdown after the opening quarter, scored twice in the second quarter and never looked back in a 47-20 romp on Chalmers Field on Saturday.

The three hour contest was covered in penalty flags with 17 being thrown for 169 yards between the two squads. UD gained 24 first downs, finished with 152 yards on the ground, 270 yards through the air to end the afternoon with 422 yards on 64 plays (6.6 yds. per avg.). Joey Rhomberg led UD in rushing with 10 carries for 61 yards for two touchdowns and completed 19-34 passes for 270 yards and two touchdowns. Kali Freeman led with five catches for 43 yards, but Kyle Harper led with three grabs for a team high 46 yards. David Mathews Jr. caught one pass for 44 yards. Jay Rush had four catches for 37 yards and rushed four times for 23 yards. Isaiah Martinez ran the ball four times for 26 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively Davien Flentroy led in tackles with nine, 4.5 tackles for losses of 19 yards including a sack for loss of nine yards and two pass break-ups. Sam Young had seven tackles, Jacob Garlick six tackles with .5 tackles for losses of two yards and intercepted a pass and returned for 12 yards. Mike Westbrooks finished with five tackles and a pick six and returned it for a Spartan touchdown from 20 yards out.

Brady Buchmann punted just once for 34 yards. Etwood Williams returned four punts for 68 yards and returned one from 51 yards for a touchdown while Camercon Brown returned one kickoff for 23 yards and Kali Freeman who had one return for 16 yards. Bennett Harp kicked off eight times for 445 yards for an average of 55.6 yards. Pato Marvite was a perfect 5-5 in extra points for the Spartans.

The Spartans (3-4 overall, 3-2 in A-R-C) will travel to Indianola, Iowa next week (Oct. 25) for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff against the SImpson College Storm (3-3 overall, 2-2 in A-R-C). The Storm won at Luther College by a 36-3 final.
