DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque women's hockey team secured a 1-0 overtime victory against the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) Raiders on Tuesday night at ImOn Arena.
It ended up being a longer game than anticipated when the Zamboni has issues between the second and third periods (which extended the time an extra 15 minutes) and then the game finished in overtime. The game remained scoreless through three periods, with both teams showcasing strong defensive efforts. The Spartans fired 23 shots on goal, closely matching the Raiders' 28 attempts. Aleah Giddings led the Spartans with seven shots on goal. The deadlock was broken in overtime when Payton Kletke netted her first career goal, assisted by Ashleigh Eldridge, clinching the win for the Spartans.
In her first collegiate start, the Spartans goalie Kara Zelyck was perfect on the night, stopping all 28 shots to earn the Spartans shutout. UD demonstrated strength in the faceoff circle, winning 20 faceoffs on the night. Zoe Cupples with seven faceoff wins and Ashleigh Eldridge with another six.
The Spartans, improved their overall record to 2-9-1. The squad aims to build on this momentum as they prepare to host Northland College on Friday, January 10 at 7:00 p.m. at ImOn Arena.
