DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque women's volleyball team opened up their home tournament with a 3-1 (15-25, 25-19, 18-25, 17-25) loss to (RV) UW-Stevens Point in the first game of the UD River City Classic on Friday night.
The Spartans would find themselves down 7-2 to the Pointers to start the match, but the Spartans responded with six of the next seven points to even the first set at eight points a piece. The Spartans were within three points lat in the set, but the Pointers finished with nine of the last 11 points of the first set, including six straight to win the set.
In the second set, the Spartans were able to flip the switch and get out to a quick 8-3 lead. Although the Spartans would have control throughout the second set, with the Spartans up 23-13, the Pointers did rally off six straight points to get within four at 23-19. The Spartans answered with the final two points to even the match at 1-1.
The third set have the Spartans up 13-12 midway through the set, but the Pointers used a 13-5 run over the course of the rest of the third set to take the 2-1 lead. The fourth set would favor the Pointers as they never trailed throughout their winning set to win the match.
Emma Powell would lead the Spartans in both kills with 12 and digs with 18. Only one other Spartan reached double figures in those categories as
Delainey Winkel recorded 10 kills and the same amount of digs.
Alexis Kammerer led with 22 assists on the night.
The Spartans had their best attacking set of the night in their winning second set, attacking at a .406% clip.
The Spartans had their five game winning streak snapped in the loss and fall to 10-6 on the season.

The Spartans will continue on Saturday, September 28 in the UD River City Classic as they play #11 Millikin University at 10:00 a.m. and then again at 3:30 p.m. against Lakeland University.
