Spartans Finish UD River City Classic With Split

Spartans defeated Lakeland University while falling to #11 Millikin University

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque women's volleyball team finished out their UD River City Classic splitting a pair of games after falling in the morning match to #11 Millikin University (25-18, 21-25, 16-25, 22-25) and defeated Lakeland University in straight sets (25-18, 25-19, 25-13).

The Spartans battled against the ranked Big Blue from the jump, getting out to a quick lead with an opening set win. The Spartans had a late lead in the second set, but Millikin was able to sneak away with the set. Millikin showed why they are ranked where they currently are as they were able to get the third and fourth sets to come away with the win. Delainey Winkel led the way with 16 kills for the Spartans and Emma Powell added 11. Taylor Bechen continues to lead the Spartans finishing with a third of the Spartans digs with 31. Alexis Kammerer and Ashlyn McGinnis accounted for 41 of the 49 assists to Spartan attackers. 

The Spartans dominated their second opponent against the Lakeland University Muskies with a clean sweep as Lakeland had numerous errors and the Spartans took full advantage. Powell and Caitlin Jensen led the way in the closing game with 10 and seven kills respectively. Jensen also led with three solo blocks. 

After the Lakeland match today, Powell surpassed 1,500 kills in her career and now has passed the 1,500 mark in both kills and digs this season for her career. 

The Spartans move to 11-7 overall on the season.

The Spartans will begin conference play next week as they take on the Loras College Duhawks inside the Stoltz Sports Center on Wednesday, October 2. The match will begin at 6:00 p.m.
