SAINT PAUL, Minn. - The University of Dubuque volleyball team got off to a hot start to open the 2024 campaign with victories over Minnesota-Morris and St. Catherine's in the first day of the Saint Paul Tournament.
In the first match of the day, the Spartans took the first two sets from Minnesota-Morris before Morris was able to clip the Spartans in the third before the Spartans finished the job in the fourth set to win 3-1 (26-24, 25-19, 19-25, 25-19). The second match against St. Catherine's was a clean sweep (29-27, 25-17, 25-23) of the Wildcats.
Coming into her fifth year with the Spartans,
Emma Powell is currently third on the active leaders in career kills and today she added onto that total with a team-high 25 kills.
Payton Uptagraft made 15 kills and
Ashley Glennon added 14 in the two victories today.
Setting up the attackers were
Alexis Kammerer and
Ashlyn McGinnis who nearly split assists totals as Kammerer recorded 40 while McGinnis finished her day with 34 assists.
Taylor Bechen recorded a team-high 43 digs and
Halee Clare had 10.0 total blocks on the defensive side.

The Spartans will finish up their season opening tournament tomorrow when they face Carthage College (9:00 a.m.) and Hamline University (1:00 p.m.) at Hutton Arena the home of Hamline University.
