Culligan's Four Goals Leads Spartans in Loss to Illinois Wesleyan

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The University of Dubuque men's lacrosse team faced a tough Illinois Wesleyan team tonight where the Spartans were unable to overcome the early deficit as they would lose by a final score of 11-16 at Tucci Stadium. 

Aidan Culligan would lead the way for the Spartans on the offensive end with six points by virtue of four goals and two assists. Sam Todd also had a great night scoring three times and assisting on a goal as well as forcing three turnovers as an attacker. The trio of Tyler Johnson, Kyle Hephner, and Aydan Rathsabandith each finished with two points in the game. 

Ryan Doyle continues to add to his team leading totals in both ground balls and caused turnovers as Doyle forced four Illinois Wesleyan turnovers and finishing one ground ball from double digits finishing with nine on the night. 

Nolan Nagy finished with 15 saves on the night in the loss as he faced a total of 51 shot attempts throughout the game. The Spartans won 14-30 faceoffs, but struggled a man-up as they went 1-6 in the game. 

How it Happened
  • The Spartans trailed 0-2 early in the first quarter before Todd scored the first Spartan goal of the night with just under four minutes to go in the first.
  • The Spartans only trailed by a goal (4-5) with 2:54 until halftime, but four unanswered goals by Illinois Wesleyan had then up 4-9 at the break. 
  • Johnson and Culligan scored the opening goals of the third to cut the Illinois Wesleyan lead to 6-9, but that was the closest the Spartans would get.
  • Illinois Wesleyan would win the third quarter whereas the Spartans won the fourth quarter as both teams scored seven apiece in the second half. 
The Spartans move to 6-5 on the season overall.

The Spartans will play their second Midwest Lacrosse Conference game this weekend when they head to Ashland, Wis. to face Northland College on Saturday, April 6 at 11:00 a.m.
