GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The University of Dubuque men's lacrosse team battled the Calvin University Knights for just the second time in program history on Tuesday afternoon. The Spartans led the Knights at the half, but a tough third quarter for the Spartans was the difference as the Spartans tried to rally in the fourth quarter, but ultimately fell by a final of 9-11.
Reigning Midwest Lacrosse Conference Offensive Athlete of the Week,
Sam Todd started the scoring with an unassisted goal a minute and a half into the game. The Spartans finished the first quarter with four goals leading the Knights by a goal after Calvin was able to manage three into the back of the net. Each team netted two goals in the second quarter as the Spartans led at the half 6-5. In the third quarter, the Spartans were unable to score while the Knights rallied off five straight goals to lead 6-10 with 15 minutes to play. The Spartans didn't falter as they slowly worked to cut the Knights deficit scoring three times in the first 5:14 of the fourth quarter. The Knights did add one goal with under nine minutes to play, but the final 8:52 of game clock would go scoreless as the Spartans fell by a two goal deficit.
Todd finished the afternoon with three goals and one assist.
Aidan Culligan and
Giovanni Silva each score twice while
Aydan Rathsabandith has now scored one goal in each of the first three games of the season. As a team, the Spartans took 31 shots and were successful on 14-22 clear attempts. Of Calvin's 22 turnovers, the Spartans were able to cause 13 turnovers.
Nolan Nagy played the entire game in goal and collected 11 saves in the loss.
The Spartans now move to 1-2 overall on the season.
