Women's Hockey Lose Opening NCHA Series to Green Knights

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque women's hockey team wrapped up their weekend series against St. Norbert College on Saturday afternoon at ImOn Arena, falling to the Green Knights 5-1.

St. Norbert struck first, finding the back of the net at the 1:32 mark of the first period for an early 1-0 lead. Goalkeeper Savannah Wuitschick kept the Spartans within reach, recording an impressive 18 saves in the first period.

In the second period, the Spartans found their spark. Taking advantage of an early power play, Aleah Giddings notched her second goal of the series, tying the game at 1-1 just 1:02 into the period, assisted by Lauren Jeffery and Madigan Depuydt. However, the Green Knights quickly responded, adding two more goals, including a power play score, to pull ahead 3-1.

Entering the third period down by two, the Spartans came out firing, recording a period-high of nine shots on goal, but were unable to convert. St. Norbert added two more goals in the final period, securing the 5-1 victory. Eleven Spartans had a shot in the game and were led by the duo of Madigan Depuydt and Alexandria Simmons who both had three shots each.

Pacey Lannet won nine faceoffs, Zoe Cupples and Arwen Sims won seven each. UD won 24 faceoffs with six different student-athletes.

Wuitschick continued her stellar weekend performance with a total of 46 saves, while Depuydt contributed three key blocks to aid the Spartan defense. The Spartans (0-3-0 overall, 0-2-0 NCHA) will look to bounce back as they hit the road to face Trine University on November 15 at 7 p.m.
