Football Scores in Three Quarters, Lose to Dutch

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque football team trailed 7-0 after the opening quarter of play to the Central College Dutch and would score in three out of the four quarters. The Spartans and the Dutch entered with just one loss each in American Rivers Conference action on Saturday, but it was the Dutch who grabbed the 38-21 conference road win.

UD's first score happened at 13:48 of the second quarter on a one yard pass from Ben Gultig to Noah Roling. UD would not find the end zone again until 8:03 left of the third and trailing 28-7 when Gultig tossed a two yard touchdown to Jamari Jenkins. It was 11 plays, 58 yards drive for the Spartans. Jenkins scored early in the fourth with an 18 yard touchdown on 11 plays and a 76 yards drive after when Gultig found him at 13:29 left of the final quarter. 

The two teams finished the afternoon similar in total yards. UD rushed for 81 yards, passed for 338 yards for a combined 419 yards of offense. The visiting Dutch rushed for 109 yards, passed for 333 yards for a total of 442 yards. 

Ben Gultig ended the day with 26-42 passing attempts for 278 yards and a trio of touchdowns. Joey Rhomberg completed 6-10 passes for 60 yards. Gultig led the Spartans in rushing with 44 yards in 10 rushing attempts. Jamari Jenkins caught 11 passes for 124 yards and a pair of touchdowns with his longest catch being for 30 yards. Hunter Preston grabbed seven catches for 62 yards, Za'Cameron Brice had four catches for 81 yards, and Dereck-Earl Saint-Hilaire finished with six catches for 57 yards. Eight different receivers caught at least one pass in the loss.

UD's defense ended the day with six tackles for losses of 25 yards and a pair of sacks for 16 yards. Jerome Wilson led with nine tackle including six solos. Landen Thomas tackled eight times and had a pass break-up. Dalton Wood and CJ Dean each finished with seven tackles each. Joziah Perez had a sack for loss of seven yards and Mike Westbrooks sacked once for a nine yard loss.

In special teams, Joseph Xiya was a perfect 3-3 in extra points, had a 36 yard field goal blocked, and kicked off four times for 191 yards for a 47 yard average. CJ Dean punted twice for 72 yards.

The Spartans will travel to Nebraska for their next American Rivers Conference match-up on Nov 2 at Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, Neb. with kick-off scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. 

UD returns home to Chalmers Field for their final home game when they host the Wartburg College Knights on Nov. 9 at 1:00 p.m. UD will end their season at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa on Nov. 16 at 1:00 p.m. on J. Leslie Rollins Stadium.
