LINCOLN, Neb. - The Spartans jumped out to a quick 24-0 halftime lead and exploded in the second half with a 28 point effort in a 52-7 road victory over the Nebraska Wesleyan University Prairie Wolves on Saturday.
UD scored 10 points in the first quarter, 14 points in the second, 21 points in the third, and just seven points in the final quarter. The Spartans allowed just seven points, a three yard pass for a touchdown on 16 plays, 70 yards drive of NWU with just under seven minutes to go in the game. The Spartans opened with a field goal for their first points. UD would score six consecutive touchdowns to put the game away. UD in the final minutes added a five yard touchdown run by
Benjamin Rodriguez at 2:08 left in the contest. The Spartans seven touchdowns happened in just 27:45 of possession time and UD would score in 6-7 red zone opportunities.
Joey Rhomberg completed 26-41 passes for 303 yards and a game high six touchdowns.
Benjamin Rodriguez was 6-7 for 72 yards. UD ended the afternoon with 12 Spartans gaining 99 yards on the ground. The receiving corps witnessed 11 receivers with a catch.
Hunter Preston led the team with six catches for 51 yards.
Jamari Jenkins grabbed five for 58 yards and a pair of touchdowns and
Za'Cameron Brice had five catches for 55 yards and a touchdown.
The Spartans defensive unit was led by the duo of
Jalin Miller who had eight tackles, a tackle for loss, a pass break-up, and two quarterback hurries. Teammate
Stone Gorman added eight tackles,
Dalton Wood seven tackles, and
Landen Thomas,
CJ Dean,
Jacob Garlick, and
Channing Williams with six each.
Channing Williams picked off a pass and returned it 56 yards and also had a tackle for loss.
In special teams,
Joey Rhomberg punted once for 42 yards and placed the ball inside the 20 yard line.
Blake Heffron returned three punts for 51 yards and two kickoff returns for 40 yards.
Alex Rashid intercepted a pass for no return.
Joseph Xiya kicked off nine times for 444 yards and an average of 49.0 yards and a perfect 7-7 in extra points.
UD (4-4 overall, 4-2 in A-R-C) returns to the friendly confines of Chalmers Field for next week's match-up with the Wartburg College Knights (7-1 overall, 6-0 in A-R-C) at 1:00 p.m. for the final home game of the 2024-25 season. The Spartans will end the year at Buena Vista University (1-7 overall, 1-5 in A-R-C) at J. Leslie Rollins Stadium on the shore of Storm Lake on Nov. 16 at 1:00 p.m.
