Women's Hockey Falls in Contested Battle at Lawrence

APPLETON, Wis. - The University of Dubuque Spartans were back in action for game two of the series against Lawrence University Vikings. The Spartans netted a goal in the first two periods as they lost 4-2.

About halfway through the first period, the Vikings were first on the scoreboard with a goal at 9:49. Nine seconds later the Spartans evened the game at 1-1 as Samantha Eldridge notched her second goal of the season. Gracie Hall and Madilynn Schiile were credited with the assists. Through one period of play the Spartans attempted 15 shots compared to the Vikings 11.

The Vikings broke the tie six minutes into the second period with two goals in a short span as the Spartans trailed 3-1. Libby Plath cut the deficit in half as she scored her third goal of the season assisted by Cassidy Becia at 9:12 of the second. Entering the third period, the Spartans found themselves in a tight game down 3-2. Offensively, the Spartans ripped off 14 shots however none of them found the back of the net. The Vikings only attempted four shots but connected on a goal in the late minutes as the Spartans fell 4-2. 

The Spartans tacked on 12 more shots than the Vikings with a total 39 shots. Olivia Hodges, Plath, and Schiile led the way with seven shots each. Faceoffs favored the Vikings as the Spartans won 25-66. Hodges won 12 faceoffs while Hall, and Chloe Byma won six each. Goalie, Savannah Wuitschick recorded 23 saves in 57:40 of action.

The Spartans will return home to ImOn Arena next week for a series against Adrian College. Game one is scheduled to start on Friday, January 26th at 7:30 p.m.
