DUBUQUE, Iowa - The second contest of a three-game series witnessed the UD women's hockey team score first and held the lead twice in Sunday's loss to Concordia University (Wis.) 5-2 loss. The Spartans heard the first of two air horn blasts after finally scoring their first goals at home in the ImOn Arena.
Lauren Jeffrey scored the first home goal at 1:59 of the first period power-play to give UD the early lead. The visiting CUW Falcons evened the score to end the opening period. Once again, UD re-took the lead quickly at the start of the second period 1:!2 when
Cassidy Becia scored on the shorthanded goal to lead 2-1. The Falcons responded by scoring twice in the second period to finish with a 3-2 lead. UD had some good looks, but were unable to find the net as the Falcons would score twice in the final period to win 5-2.
Sixteen penalties were whistled in the game and the Spartans were able to compile five shots off the power-plays and collected one power-play goal. The Spartans defense held the visitors out of the net in seven out of eight power-plays and faced 14 shots and ended the afternoon with blocked 15 shots in the game. UD ended the afternoon with 14 shots as the duo of
Madilynn Schiile and
Cassidy Becia would lead UD with three shots.
The Spartans won 23 faceoffs and lost 59.
Olivia Hodges won nine faceoffs and lost 25,
Chloe Byma was 7-16 and
Gracie Hall was 6-10.
In goal,
Savannah Wuitschick played all 60:00 in goal and faced 33 shots (nine in the first, 13 in the second, and 11 in the third).
UD will play the third game vs. CUW in a non-conference match-up on Monday, Jan.15 at 2:30 p.m. at ImOn Arena in a re-scheduled game from Friday, Jan.12.
